Sustainable Promotional Merchandise

Sustainability is now a standard requirement in most procurement and marketing briefs — not a bonus. This page explains how Zest Promotional helps you source merchandise that meets your organisation's sustainability commitments, from material selection through to end-of-life guidance.

Whether you're responding to an internal ESG policy, a procurement framework requiring sustainable supplier criteria, or simply want to ensure branded gifts align with your company's values — we can help you make informed product choices and provide supporting documentation where needed.

Sustainable Materials & Products

Sustainable promotional merchandise falls into four broad material categories. Understanding these helps you specify the right products for your brief and back up purchasing decisions with accurate environmental claims.

Reusable
Recycled
Renewable
Ethical Fabrics

Reusable products are made from durable natural materials that last for years. They reduce waste by replacing single-use alternatives, and the quality feel makes them more likely to be kept and used — extending your brand's visibility.

Glass

Sustainable, budget-friendly, easy to clean and long-lasting. Suitable for drinkware. Can be recycled at end of life.

Slate

100% natural mineral with minimal manufacturing impact. Handcrafted from the quarry. Naturally recyclable at end of life.

Ceramics

Durable, heat-resistant and corrosion-resistant. Ideal for drinkware and everyday desk items. Can be recycled and reused.

Why choose reusable?

Products that replace disposables demonstrate a tangible commitment to waste reduction — useful when sustainability reporting requires evidence of action, not just intention.

Recycled materials give existing resources a second life, reducing demand for virgin raw materials and diverting waste from landfill. These are among the most verifiable sustainability claims in promotional merchandise.

Recycled PET (RPET)

Made from reclaimed plastic bottles. Used in bags, bottles, and clothing. Directly reduces plastic waste and the need for virgin resin.

Recycled PET Felt

Traditional felt products now available with RPET fibre content. Maintains the look and feel while contributing to a more sustainable product.

Recycled Fabrics

Made from pre-consumer (production scrap) and post-consumer (used textiles) waste. Processed back into fibre without re-dyeing where possible.

Recycled Paper

Sorted and processed post-consumer paper stock used for notebooks, packaging and stationery. Reduces landfill and new tree usage.

Recycled ABS Plastic

ABS is one of the most common engineering plastics. Recycled ABS gives it a second life in tech accessories and drinkware.

Documentation available

Recycled material claims can be supported with supplier sustainability declarations and test reports. Available on request for all relevant products.

Renewable materials come from natural sources that can replenish themselves over time. They typically require minimal chemical processing and are biodegradable at end of life.

Bamboo

One of the fastest-growing plants on earth. Naturally pest-resistant, requires no pesticides. Absorbs CO₂. 100% natural and biodegradable.

Cork

Harvested from the bark of the cork oak without cutting the tree. Biodegradable and flexible. One of the most environmentally friendly industries globally.

Wood & Oak

Renewable organic material requiring no chemical treatment. Oak is particularly long-lasting. Products include pens, speakers, homeware and packaging.

Jute

The world's second most-used natural textile fibre. Completely plant-based, biodegradable, and leaves zero environmental impact. Widely used for bags and totes.

Cotton

Natural, breathable, biodegradable fibre. Extremely durable, meaning products last longer. Used across clothing, bags and accessories.

Hemp

One of the oldest eco-friendly textile fibres. Grows without pesticides or fertilisers. 100% organic and 100% recyclable fibres.

Ethical fabrics are organically processed materials produced without harmful chemicals, and often verified by independent third-party certification bodies. They provide traceable, credible sustainability claims for clothing and textile products.

Organic Cotton

Grown without pesticides, herbicides or fertilisers. Must be independently certified (e.g. GOTS) for the claim to be used in marketing. Supply chain verification is mandatory.

Recycled Fabrics (Upcycled)

Recovered from old or unworn clothing and waste textiles. Prevents usable material going to landfill. Colour segregation during processing avoids re-dyeing.

GOTS Certification

The Global Organic Textile Standard is the most credible third-party verification for organic fibres. We can confirm certification status on request.

Why it matters for procurement

If your organisation requires suppliers to evidence ethical sourcing, certified ethical fabrics provide the documentation chain needed to satisfy procurement audits and ESG reporting.

Sustainability Checklist for Buyers

Use this as a framework when briefing sustainable merchandise requirements. We can advise on all of these points and provide supporting documentation where available.

  • Material specificationCan you specify the material type — recycled, renewable, reusable or certified ethical? The more specific the brief, the more accurate the sustainability claim.
  • Certification requirementsDoes your procurement policy require third-party certification? We work with suppliers who hold GOTS, FSC, OEKO-TEX and other recognised standards, and can provide test reports.
  • PackagingProduct packaging can be specified as recycled or renewable material, reduced in volume, or removed entirely for storage/fulfilment orders. We can advise on the options available per product.
  • Longevity over volumeProducts that last — drinkware, quality bags, clothing — create less waste than cheaper alternatives discarded after one use. We can help you balance budget against expected product lifespan.
  • Quantity planningOver-ordering is one of the most common sources of promotional merchandise waste. We help clients plan realistic quantities, and offer storage and fulfilment for ongoing call-off against stock.
  • End-of-life guidanceWhat happens to leftover stock? We advise on repurposing, donating, or recycling products appropriately. Supplier end-of-life guidance is available for materials where this is relevant.
  • Supplier complianceWe only work with factories that are fully compliant and can provide test reports. We maintain full transparency with documentation available on request.

Packaging & Transportation

Sustainable Packaging Options

Packaging is often overlooked in sustainability briefs but makes a significant difference to waste output. Our approach prioritises:

  • Transition to recycled or renewable packaging materials
  • Reducing packaging volume where possible
  • Less storage space and handling requirements
  • Lower fuel usage and reduced emissions during transport
  • Minimised waste at the point of receipt

Transportation Practices

We work to reduce the carbon footprint of how products reach you:

  • Maximising utilisation of shipment scheduling to consolidate loads
  • Container consolidation to reduce part-load shipping
  • Selecting environmentally positive freight forwarders
  • Measuring the CO₂ footprint of warehousing and delivery
  • Ongoing analysis to identify and reduce waste in logistics

End of Life — What to Do With Leftover Stock

Leftover products after events or campaigns are common. The most sustainable outcome is never landfill. Here are the recommended approaches in order of preference:

1. Repurpose

  • Gift to employees or new starters
  • Include as gift-with-purchase for customers
  • Use as giveaway items for walk-ins or events
  • Add to raffle prizes or competitions
  • Hold back for your next campaign

2. Donate

  • Local schools (stationery particularly popular)
  • Local charities
  • Sporting clubs (bottles, bags work well)
  • Second-hand or thrift stores
  • List online via Gumtree or Facebook Marketplace

3. Recycle

  • Check if the material is kerbside recyclable
  • Tote bag textile bins at supermarkets
  • Repurpose apparel as rags or painting cloths
  • Some items may be compostable
  • Supplier end-of-life guidance available on request

Storage & fulfilment as a waste reduction tool. One of the most effective ways to avoid leftover stock is better stock management. Zest Promotional offers secure warehouse storage with pick-and-pack fulfilment, allowing you to order a larger quantity once and distribute on demand — rather than ordering per-event and over-estimating.

Compliance & Certifications

Test reports are available for all products — we maintain full transparency and provide documentation on request.

We only use factories that are fully compliant with our standards. This includes both product safety compliance and supply chain sustainability requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Test reports and supplier sustainability declarations are available for all products where applicable. If your procurement process requires specific documentation — such as GOTS certification for organic cotton or RPET material declarations — let us know at the briefing stage and we will confirm what is available before you commit to an order.
Sustainable merchandise does not have to carry a significant price premium. Recycled paper products, jute bags, cotton shoppers, and bamboo pens are all available at accessible price points. We can advise on the best sustainable options within your budget during the briefing process.
The key is specificity. Vague claims such as "eco-friendly" carry little weight and face increasing legal scrutiny. Claims should reference the specific material (e.g. "made from 100% RPET recycled plastic") and ideally be backed by certification or a supplier declaration. We will advise on what can and cannot be accurately claimed for each product, and will not oversell a product's sustainability credentials.
Yes. We can build a curated selection of products across multiple categories — clothing, bags, drinkware, stationery, tech accessories — sourced from sustainable materials with consistent branding. If you have a specific material requirement or certification threshold, share this in your brief and we will work within those parameters.
Packaging can be specified as recycled cardboard, paper bags, tissue paper, or reduced/removed entirely for storage orders. If sustainable packaging is a requirement, include this in the brief and we will confirm the available options per product. Full-colour printed boxes using recycled board are available for branded gift packaging.
