What is a Pantone colour?

Pantone (PMS) is the global standard for colour matching across print, product, and branding. Each colour has a unique code that ensures consistency regardless of supplier or material.

Screen vs. print colours

The swatches below are screen approximations only. Colours appear differently on screen versus physical print. Always use physical Pantone swatch books for final approval of branded merchandise.

About Pantone Colour Matching for Branded Merchandise

The Pantone Matching System (PMS) is the internationally recognised standard for colour reproduction across print and physical products. When you order branded merchandise — whether that's printed clothing, embroidered jackets, screen-printed bags, or laser-engraved drinkware — specifying a Pantone colour code ensures your brand colours are reproduced consistently, regardless of which supplier, factory, or printing method is used.

For businesses with strict brand guidelines, specifying Pantone colours for your logo is essential. Where a product supports Pantone matching, a logo in PMS 286 will reproduce consistently whether it's on a pen, a tote bag, or a notebook. Not all products or branding methods support exact Pantone matching, but specifying your PMS codes allows us to get as close as possible and advise where a compromise is needed.

How to find your Pantone colour

Your brand's Pantone colours should be listed in your brand guidelines document. They'll typically appear as a code like "PMS 186 C" (the C denotes Coated stock) or simply "PMS 186". If you don't have brand guidelines, your designer or marketing agency will be able to provide them.

If you're unsure of your exact Pantone code, our team can help identify the closest match using your existing branded materials. We work closely with suppliers to achieve the most accurate colour reproduction possible for each product and branding method.

Pantone colour codes explained

The standard PMS Solid Coated range — the most commonly used for promotional products — runs from PMS 100 through to the 500s and includes named colours such as Warm Red, Reflex Blue, Rubine Red, Rhodamine Red, Process Blue, and Green. Beyond the core numbered range, Pantone also produces the 1000–1900 series, the 2000–5000 extended ranges, and specialist systems including Metallics, Pastels and Neons.

For most promotional product orders, the standard solid coated range will cover your requirements. If your brand uses a metallic or pastel Pantone, let our team know and we'll advise on which products and branding methods best support those colour specifications.

Screen colours vs. physical Pantone swatches

The colour swatches shown in this guide are screen approximations only. Monitors, phones, and tablets display colours using the RGB colour model, which has a fundamentally different gamut to printed Pantone inks. Some Pantone colours — particularly vivid oranges, bright greens, and fluorescents — cannot be accurately represented on screen. For final colour approval on any branded merchandise order, physical Pantone swatch books should always be used as the reference standard.

Pantone matching at Zest Promotional

We work with suppliers across the UK, Europe, and Asia who support Pantone colour matching across a wide range of products and branding methods including screen printing, pad printing, embroidery, dye sublimation, and laser engraving. When you provide a PMS code with your order, we pass this through the supply chain to ensure accuracy at every stage.

Not all branding methods support exact Pantone matching — embroidery, for example, works to thread colour charts rather than PMS codes, and we'll always advise on the closest available match. If colour accuracy is critical to your brief, we can arrange pre-production samples for approval before committing to a full production run.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Pantone colour?

Pantone is a standardised colour matching system used across print, product manufacturing, and branding worldwide. Each colour is assigned a unique PMS (Pantone Matching System) number, which means the same colour can be reliably reproduced across different suppliers, factories, and materials. For branded merchandise, specifying a Pantone code ensures your logo colour is as consistent as possible across every product you order.

How do I find my brand's Pantone colour?

Your Pantone colours should be listed in your brand guidelines. They'll typically appear as a code like "PMS 286 C" or simply "PMS 286". If you don't have brand guidelines, your designer, marketing agency, or whoever created your logo will be able to provide them. If you have existing printed materials such as business cards or brochures, our team can help identify the closest Pantone match.

Do all promotional products support Pantone matching?

No — not all products or branding methods support exact Pantone matching. Screen printing and pad printing on hard goods typically support spot colour matching. Embroidery uses thread colour charts rather than PMS codes. Digital and DTF printing uses CMYK which approximates Pantone colours but may not match exactly. When you order with Zest Promotional, we'll always advise on the expected colour accuracy for your chosen product and method.

Why do the swatches on screen look different to the physical Pantone colour?

Screens display colour using the RGB colour model, which produces colour through light. Pantone inks are physical pigments mixed to precise formulas. These two systems have different colour gamuts — the range of colours they can reproduce — so a screen can only approximate how a Pantone ink will look. Some colours, particularly vivid oranges, bright greens, and fluorescents, differ significantly between screen and print. Always use a physical Pantone swatch book for final colour approval.

What's the difference between Pantone Coated (C) and Uncoated (U)?

The same Pantone ink looks different depending on the surface it's applied to. Coated (C) refers to glossy or coated paper/surfaces, where colours appear more vivid. Uncoated (U) refers to uncoated or matte surfaces, where the same ink appears slightly duller and more muted. For promotional products, coated (C) is most commonly referenced. If your brand guidelines specify both, use C for hard goods and glossy print, U for uncoated paper products.

Can I get a pre-production sample to check the colour before a full order?

Yes. For larger orders, Zest Promotional can arrange a pre-production sample — a fully branded product produced before the full run for your approval. This is the most reliable way to check colour accuracy before committing to production. Ask your account manager for details on availability and cost for your specific product.

My Pantone colour isn't in the chart — where can I find it?

This chart covers the most commonly used colours from the standard PMS Solid Coated range. The full Pantone library includes over 1,800 colours across multiple systems including Metallics, Pastels, and Neons. If your colour isn't here, search the complete library at pantone.com/color-finder. Just note the PMS code and supply it with your order.
